What is the TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone of the skull and is found on both sides of your head just in front of your ears. The mandible and temporal bone are separated by an articular disc made of cartilage which acts as a lubricant for the bones and prevents them from rubbing against each other. The muscles of mastication (chewing) and muscles of the neck combine to provide the various movements of the jaw such as chewing, speaking, yawning and breathing. As with all joints of the body, the TMJ is susceptible to dysfunction, termed temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
A temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a very common condition affecting one-third of the population at some point in their lifetime but most commonly between the ages of 20-40. TMD is often referred to as a musculoskeletal disorder and is often caused by repetitive motions which strain the muscles and joints of the jaw (Wright and North, 2009).
The primary symptom of TMD includes jaw pain whilst using the jaw or at rest however in more severe cases patients will experience:
The following may increase your chance of getting TMD:
TMD responds well to a combination of hands-on osteopathic treatment techniques (dry needling, mobilisation/manipulation, massage), patient education, exercise rehabilitation and stress management strategies.
At MHNJ we take time to understand the intricacies of your TMD to give you the best chance of recovery. We assess, diagnose and combine the above treatment strategies to effectively manage your TMD. Providing patients with the tools they need to actively manage their TMD at home is an essential part of our treatment plans.
Chronic TMD patients may require extra care so we work in close conjunction with other treatment modalities such as psychologists, psychotherapists, dentists and cosmetic nurses to help you access these services conveniently and without hassle.
